Reading and Literacy at The Coleshill School

At The Coleshill School we are dedicated to ensuring every child can read and communicate with confidence. It is through reading that a person can understand the world around them and can access the tools they need to be able to succeed in life and to reach their full potential. It is our mission to equip every child with the necessary literacy skills to not only support their learning in school but to access the world beyond school. We want our students to enjoy the exciting adventures a good book can take them on, to read literature they will love, to enlighten them to new ideas, and to develop their critical thinking.

To enable our students to become competent readers we run tutor time reading, Accelerated Reader and Bedrock. Year 7, 8 and 9 all have a reading lesson once a fortnight in our library. We explicitly teach key words to help expand our students’ vocabulary and we run a reading club to provide students with the opportunity to talk about literature.
